Private messenger · Android

In final testing

Talk privately. Your phone number stays out of it.

For lawyers, journalists, founders and executives, whose conversations carry real weight. You sign up with a username, not your number, and connect through personal invitations. On SeTalk, nobody can look you up by your number, because it never asks for it.

First month US$9.90, then US$99/month. Or US$285 for 90 days, US$950 for a year. Paid in Monero, renewed only when you choose.

The first-month price applies to your account's first payment, if it's the monthly plan.

The Android app is in final testing; the download is coming soon and sign-ups aren't open yet. iPhone is planned for a later phase. Read the limits before moving sensitive conversations.

Real situations

Some conversations are worth more than the rest.

Five moments when people with a lot at stake choose carefully where they talk, and what SeTalk does in each one.

Lawyer

Closing a settlement

The figures are final, the client is anxious, and nothing should circulate before both sides sign.

How SeTalk helpsYour account has no phone number, email or real name attached, and the account service keeps no contacts and no messages.

Your situation isn't here?

It works the same for any conversation you'd rather keep inside a small, known circle. Before you move anything sensitive, see what SeTalk can't protect.

Why no phone number

Your phone number says more about you than you think.

It's tied to your carrier, to the text-message codes from your bank and, in many countries, to your ID. Most messengers start with it.

  • WhatsAppa phone number
  • Telegrama phone number
  • Signala phone number (a no-number option is in beta on Android)
  • SeTalka username. Never your number.

SeTalk never asks for your number, not even once.

We're not the only ones: SimpleX, Session and Threema don't ask for one either. See the full comparison, with sources and dates.

In transit

Your message travels scrambled.

Only you and your contact read it. The servers handle only the scrambled version, and still see that a message passed and when.

Illustration of a message: you write it in plain text, the server handles it scrambled and your contact reads it in plain text again.

Illustration: the scrambled text is only a drawing, not the real encryption. The server does not read the content; it still sees that a message went through, and when.

#ForReal

This is everything we keep about you.

No fine print. This is the complete record our account service keeps for a SeTalk account. Everything else stays on your phone, never reaches us, or is listed in the threat model. After you delete the account, the username stays blocked for 30 days, kept only as a hash. Invoices are kept for accounting, unlinked from the account.

What our servers see

Messages travel through relay queues. Each queue has its own separate credentials, and the server keeps no record linking a queue to a person, or one person to another.

1 · What you seeFour people talking to each other in a private group

You and your contacts, in conversations.

2 · How it worksBetween two people there are two separate queues: one carries messages from left to right, the other from right to left

Each direction of each conversation uses its own queue.

3 · What the server seesInside the server there are only separate queues with messages passing through. No people appear

Only queues. No names, no phone numbers, no address book.

Your payment

Paid in Monero. A card shows up on your bank statement and Bitcoin payments are public; the Monero blockchain doesn't show who paid, who received or how much. Why we only accept Monero.

Your phone

Your messages and contacts live on your phone, not on our servers. That makes the phone the thing to protect. See the limits.

How it works

Four steps, at your own pace.

No forms asking who you are. Just what's needed to keep your account yours.

  1. Create your account

Pick a username and a password, save your recovery codes and set up an authenticator app.

  2. Pay your first invoice

Choose a plan and pay in Monero on this website. The rate is locked for 60 minutes.

  3. Install and sign in

The Android app is coming soon. When it's out, you'll sign in with your username, password and authenticator code. The first time you open the app, a short guide explains how SeTalk works and sets up an app passcode and a reserved profile.

  4. Connect someone you trust

Send a personal invitation link or QR code, then confirm the contact through another channel.

Built on SimpleX

Why pay when other messengers are free?

SimpleX is an independent open-source project with its own free apps, and they're a good choice. SeTalk is a separate subscription service on that foundation: a familiar interface, servers we run and maintain, clear guides, and real help getting your small circle connected.

Your subscription pays for the service itself: the app, the servers and the help.

Included

  • SeTalk app for Android, with updates
  • SeTalk relay servers for messages and files
  • Installation and connection guides
  • Help by message in English and Portuguese

Not included

  • iPhone app (later phase)
  • 24/7 support or service-level agreement
  • An independent audit of SeTalk itself

Pricing

One price per person. No automatic charges.

You pay each period in Monero on this website, when you decide to renew. Nothing is ever charged without you.

First month US$9.90

Monthly

US$99 / 30 days

US$9.90 on your account's first payment, if it's the monthly plan. Then US$99.

  • All features
  • One invoice for a year

First month US$9.90, then US$99/month. It applies only if your account's first payment is on the monthly plan. An offer invoice paid short or after it expired also counts as used. The amount that counts is always the one on the invoice issued by the service.

If your subscription expires, you still have 7 days to read your conversations and renew; after that the app is locked until you renew. Nothing is deleted. Each of your contacts needs their own subscription.

Security limits

We'll tell you what it can't protect.

Encryption is one part of protecting a conversation. A phone that's unlocked or compromised, a contact who saves or forwards a message, an invitation sent to the wrong person: no app fixes those, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Before you move sensitive conversations

  • Lock your phone and set an app passcode
  • Confirm each contact through another channel
  • Send invitations only to the right person
  • Back up your authenticator and keep your recovery codes away from your phone

Questions

Before you decide

Is there an iPhone version?

The first release is for Android. An iPhone version is planned for a later phase; we don't promise a date.

Can I message my WhatsApp contacts?

No. SeTalk is a separate messenger. Your contact installs SeTalk and you connect through a personal invitation.

Does my contact need to pay too?

Yes. Each SeTalk account has its own subscription.

Will I be charged automatically?

No. There are no automatic charges. Each period is a new invoice that you pay in Monero on this website, when you choose to renew.

Why only Monero?

With a card, your bank statement shows who you paid. With Bitcoin, payments are public forever. With Monero, the blockchain doesn't show who paid, who received or how much. The exchange where you bought it still knows you bought Monero. Why we only accept Monero.

Do I need a phone number, email or real name?

No. You sign up with a username, a password and an authenticator app. Everything the service keeps is listed in "What SeTalk knows about you" above.

What happens if I don't renew?

You have 7 days to read your conversations and renew. After that the app is locked until you renew. Nothing is deleted.

What if my phone stays offline for a long time?

If your phone stays offline for more than 21 days, reading is locked until it reconnects, even with a paid subscription. Nothing is deleted: once the phone is back online, the app checks your subscription again.

Can my recovery codes bring back my conversations?

No. Recovery codes only help you get back into your SeTalk account. Your conversations live on your phone; the codes can't restore them from a lost phone.

I lost my password and my phone. Can support help?

No. Your account opens with two of three: password, authenticator, recovery codes. Without two of them, nobody can recover it, including us. Your conversations on your phone are not affected by your account.

Is SeTalk independently audited?

The Trail of Bits reviews cover the upstream SimpleX project, in the versions examined. SeTalk itself has not had an independent audit yet.

Can SeTalk promise that nobody can ever break in?

No. That guarantee doesn't exist, for SeTalk or any other app. SeTalk uses the encryption and privacy controls of its SimpleX base. The security of your phone and what the people you talk to do with your messages are still part of the risk. Read the threat model.
